As our nation and the world are becoming increasingly urban in character, there is a growing interest in urban studies. The main concerns of the field are critical issues of urban and regional growth and change, as well as environmental and social balance. To exhibit real leadership, you must be a visionary, a trailblazer, a strategist, a communicator, a coach, a diplomat and a representative. The world's most successful leaders are able to focus on the big picture and uphold high standards while wearing much hats. This session will familiarize fellows with the social, economic, political, and physical aspects of major urban issues.

Program Objectives:

  • Setting priorities under fiscal constraint
  • Building the economic base in a global economy
  • Citizen participation and consensus building
  • Linking infrastructure and operational needs to improve quality of life
  • Striking a balance between the political & technical frameworks of good public policy in a democracy

Learning Outcomes:

  • Know the latest theories on urban management and development
  • Evaluate these theories and assess their relevance for the local condition
  • Analyze urban policies,
  • Discuss a multi stakeholder approach,
  • Analyze governance and planning structures
  • Develop neighborhood action plans.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR – Honorable Mayor Shirley Gibson

Ms. Gibson has a diverse background in the public and non-profit sector. From 2003 to 2012, she was the first Mayor of the City of Miami Gardens. Committed with faith determination, vision that better would be the future for the community with self-determination, she led the charge to create the City, the largest African American City in the State of Florida. The third largest city, thirty-third (33) municipality to be incorporated in Miami-Dade County. In 1996, she was elected to the public offices of Community Council Three and the Miami Dade’s Democratic Party Executive Committee. Ms. Gibson served as chairperson of the North Dade Municipal Advisory Committee and the Committee to Incorporate the City of Miami Gardens. Co-Chair Census Count 2010 for Miami Dade County. She is a member of the Dade County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. A retired seventeen year Miami Dade Police Officer; a previous business owner for more than fifteen years, and is skilled in community organizing. She is a skilled negotiator, using a collaborative approach to incorporate diversity, inclusiveness, and responsibility for effective outcomes. She co-hosted the “Miami Talk” radio program and has been a guest panelist on several local television programs. Featured on, MSNBC “What Works in Cities” with Brian Williams. Guest appearance “Morning Joe Television Show” sharing commentary reference Florida in 2010 Presidential Election. Extensive experience as Panelist and Keynote speaker nationally and internationally discussing leadership of elected government officials, and community related issues. Ms. Gibson is a graduate of St. Thomas University with a B.A. in Criminal Justice and M.A. in Pastoral Ministry and Honorary Ph.D. Humane Letters.
