MetroForum Breakfast to Discuss Miami-Dade Special Election for “Strong Mayor”
Miami Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez and Metropolitan Center Director Dr. Dario Moreno will be the headline speakers at a breakfast entitled “The Aftermath of the Strong Mayor Vote: What Happens Now?” The panel will discuss the future direction of county government following the results of the January 23, 2006 special election to decide if the structure of the County government should be changed.

Latest Statewide Poll Shows Property Tax Proposal Does Not Have Enough Support
Florida International University’s Metropolitan Center, an urban think tank, released a poll today showing that education is no longer the number one issue for Florida voters. Replacing education as the key issues are taxes (24.9%), insurance (21.6%), and crime (13.3%). The property tax reform has been proposed by House Republicans to address the increasing costs of property taxes and homeowners insurance for Florida residents.

Rick Rodriguez Piña, Founder and President of Piña and Associates, has been named Chair of the Board of Directors of the FIU Metropolitan Center. Piña, appointed to the board in 2003, succeeds Sandra Gonzalez-Levy, Senior Vice President of Terremark Worldwide Inc.

FIU Metropolitan Center Welcomes New Board Members
The Florida International University Metropolitan Center has announced the addition of three new members to its Advisory Board. Joining the Board for the 2007 are Lorrie-Ann Diaz, Director of Marketing Communications for the Miami Heat, Keith Bell, Vice President and Senior Community Development Officer of Wachovia Bank, and Marcos Freire, General Manager of Mary Brickell Village.
