Let's talk about... (un)affordable Miami

More than 160 people showed up on Wednesday, May 11, reminding us how imperative this issue is in Miami-Dade County. Dr. Murray started the night by stating the current housing situation in the county in academic terms and then taking off his academia hat, as he stated, to speak on the options we have to deal with this issue. Daniella Levine-Cava, Commissioner for District 8, informed us of the various policies the county commission is pushing for, including bringing the Community Land Trust model to Miami-Dade county. As housing and community development professionals, Mandy Bartle. Executive Director for the South Florida Community Land Trust, Shekeria Brown, Executive Director for the South Florida Community Development Coalition, and Dr. Ralph Rosado, co-creator and co-instructor of the community scholar in Affordable Housing Program - chimed in on ideas and solutions that they are working on to alleviate the lack of affordable housing. Nicholas Nehamas, provided the audience with a journalist perspective and discussed the print media’s role in covering this critical policy issue beyond his own reporting.
